TIMELINE

The brief timeline below is simply a starter for ten. It follows that details of further significant events relating to Gawsworth village or its parish council since 1894 are sought with a view to this page ultimately recording brief descriptions of all noteworthy Gawsworth happenings since the introduction of its parish council. Please email the Clerk with any contributions. Thank you. Hopefully this page will significantly grow over the coming months.

2008

The two parish council-owned bus shelters at Penningtons Lane were both demolished and replaced with modern shelters (supplied by CCC free of charge) with CCC assuming responsibility for their maintenance thereafter. The notice board, previously affixed to the brick bus shelter, was re-established higher up Penningtons Lane on the grass verge adjacent to the JUC-owned land as a consequence.

Two further new parish council noticeboads purchased to replace those at the Pleasance green and Longbutts Lane. Note that the new noticeboard previously mounted at Longbutts Lane in 2006 was switched to replace the old one affixed to the bricked bus shelter near to Penningtons Lane.

2006 Scheme to reduce the speed limit on the A536 through Gawsworth from 50 mph to 40 mph implemented. New parish council noticeboard mounted on the electricity sub-station wall (with permission from United Utilities) in Longbutts Lane on 6th February as a replacement for the noticeboard removed from the crossroads area in 2005.

2005

The extensively restored and enhanced playing field was re-opened on 7th June as Gawsworth Park with its official opening taking place on 9th July. It now boasts two new Play Areas, a fitness trail, a mini football pitch, a basketball goal and a fully restored tennis court in its newly landscaped surrounding. The Parish Council, as sole trustee to the John Upton Charity and with the consent of the Charities Commission, sold the Moss Terrace Cottages by auction on 3rd November.
2000 To celebrate the millennium the Gawsworth W.I. produced a publication titled 'The Parish of Gawsworth in the year 2000'. A snapshot of Gawsworth residents and their environment.

The hall consisted of a 'hut', that had been purchased the previous year for £250, and a 10ft extension that had been added at a cost of £150. The site had been earmarked for a parish hall as long ago as 1936 when the purchase of a playing field was first mooted.
